TOP GUN TEACHINGS – BELIEF IN SELF + TEAM

BELIEF IN SELF + TEAM MOMENTS FROM TOP GUN MAVERICK:

It is so important to believe in self but equally as important for a leader / manager to empower beliefs into their team. Example: Never tell someone what not to do.  For instance, never say, “Don’t hit the ball in the water.”  This is a sure-fire way to ensure failure.  Prior to going out on their mission, Maverick said to “Rooster” Bradshaw (Goose’s son), “We’ll talk when you get back.  You got this.”

KEEPING THE EGO IN CHECK

Taming the raging ego isn’t that difficult, but it does require a degree of self-awareness and a fair amount of humility.

First, you can’t hide from your ego. It exists. Acknowledge and respect it, but don’t deny it. Your ego serves an important purpose, and you have to embrace it to leverage it to success. A great leader understands that the ego is a powerful tool and uses it. They just keep their egos on a very tight leash.

The beach football scene makes a strong statement about leadership—all teams need time to build connections, outside of their day-to-day work. Vice Admiral Simpson is not happy when he looks for the team onsite and instead finds them at the beach. As he says, “The team still has critical training to do.”
But as Maverick responds, “You said to create a team, sir. There’s your team.” And that’s the rub, it may seem like you don’t have time for team-building, but the truth is, you don’t have time not to.

Without investing just a small amount of time for teams to build trust and connection, you really don’t have a team. Especially in our current work environment, when people are in distributed and hybrid work environments, and are feeling stressed. Team bonding and strong relationships are critical to alleviate those stressors and cope with our current reality.
